State Meet and Awards Night

First, I'll share a brief reminder about our awards night. We sincerely hope that every team member will attend. Full participation has generally been the case through the years and we hope that Wednesday will see the same. We invite parents and other loved ones, as well. If you have never been, you should ask someone who has. Awards night is this Wednesday evening (11/13) at 6:30. Thank you to Laura Taylor (mother of Natalie, '21) who has coordinated a sign-up for a dessert: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050948ACAB2FA75-sunset.

(Note about UNIFORMS return at the bottom of this email).

STATE MEET RECAP:

Yesterday, on a picture perfect autumn day in Eugene, our girls team codified their status as the #5 team in Oregon, led once again by the pride of Sunset XC, Lucy Huelskamp ('20). She was joined in scoring by All-State Honorable Mention Paige Wiley ('23) as well as Jasmine Wang ('20), Kate Dobson ('23), and, for the first time this season in a scoring role, Eva McIlraith ('22). Rounding out our racing squad were Samhita Tovinkere ('21) and Blake Chennai ('20). Finishing 5th was a season-long and years-long effort by the collection of girls that make up our entire squad. We are proud as ever of the efforts of this indomitable group of athletes.

Our boys team was ranked sixth in the state prior to yesterday, and rightly so. We had been defeated by programs like Sherwood and South Eugene in head-to-head match-ups while Central Catholic looked to be their usual strong selves in the MHCC. The boys ran a beautiful and courageous race. A true fan of the sport will look at the split results on live.tf. Though our first finisher, All-State Second Team Benny Balazs ('22), had a chip malfunction to hide his progress, you can see how the rest of the scoring team moved up after the first split: All-State Third Team Collin Beyer ('21) up 7 positions, All-State Honorable Mention David Cummings ('20) up 9, Alex King ('21) up 9, and Mason Gerwig ('20) up 15. We guess that Benny moved up 10-12 positions given his relative position. Rounding out our racing squad were Carson Cummins ('20) and Ben Nichols ('20). We finished 3rd overall as a team(!!!), edging 4th place Central Catholic by just 4 points and 5th place Sherwood by 6. It was truly a team effort and one of the finest team performances that Sunset has ever known.

Congratulations to everyone on our team.
